The Dental Pain Study Model (Third Molar Extraction) is an important, validated study model for evaluating the effectiveness of analgesic products in providing pain relief. As applied to post-procedural pain, it is efficient to recruit for these studies, and the model is highly controlled and provides consistency in the procedures and level and type of pain from patient to patient. The model is also highly effective in characterizing pain (level of relief scales, onset measurement with the two stop-watch method, duration of effect over time, and comparison of active ingredients). The model has a long history of use, and its design, application, and impact have evolved during that time. While the model’s focus is on dental pain, the model is well recognized, and regulatory authorities regularly extrapolate pain relief with dental pain to other types of pain. This program would include a review of the Dental Pain Study Model by one its innovators (its evolution and unique benefits). This review would be in the context of OTC pain relievers, which have been shown to be effective in relieving dental pain and can serve a first line option that are readily accessible and can reduce the use of opioid based pain relievers.
