When managing the dental pain associated with tooth extractions and toothache, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) offer benefits that opioids do not. To facilitate the safe and effective prescription of such painkillers, this presentation teaches you the latest evidence-based recommendations on how to pharmacologically treat dental pain while minimizing potential adverse effects. The recommendations are part of a new FDA-funded guideline written by the ADA Science & Research Institute, the University of Pittsburgh, and the University of Pennsylvania.
Learning Objectives:
Understand the current evidence on managing acute dental pain, including the benefits of NSAIDs over opioids
Identify strategies for incorporating chairside conversations with patients into the development of a pain management plan
Incorporate into practice the latest recommendations on managing acute dental pain
